  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in U.S. women (excluding skin cancer).  Approximately 250,000 thousand new cases are diagnosed each year (182,000 invasive and 68,000 non invasive)
  • It is currently estimated that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. In 1975 the estimate was one in 11 women.
  • It is estimated that 3 million women in the U.S. are living with breast cancer (more than any other cancer excluding skin cancer).
  • Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for U.S. women between the ages of 20 and 59 years.
  • Starting in 2001 there has been a drop in incidence of breast cancer.  It is believed that reduction in use of hormone replacement therapy has been the major contributor to this drop.  However, there is concern the drop could, in part, be related to a decrease in the numbers of women undergoing regular screening mammography.
