Strategies -- Education and Changing Behavior

  • The BeAware Foundation strives for women to personally acknowledge that "breast cancer could affect ME." Women must believe they are at risk to take consistent action. The Foundation has designed the BeAware Program to be direct education that:
    • Is understandable, personal, and inspirational.
    • Occurs in a welcoming setting, supported by peers.
    • Dispels myths and get the facts out:
      • The Bad News - breast cancer could affect you.
      • The Good News - early detection increases options, improves health, and saves lives.
    • Changes behavior.

  • The BeAware Program is a one-hour program presented by an RN and volunteer breast cancer survivor in a lunch-and-learn setting at corporations and other organizations. The Program includes:
    • Seven minute video presenting the stories of four breast cancer survivors.
    • Brief formal presentation explaining the early detection guidelines and the facts about breast cancer.
    • Opportunity for participants to develop a Personal Plan of Action to follow the early detection guidelines.
    • Invitation for participants to sign up with BHAF to receive regular reminders (on the schedule they choose) to ensure they consistently follow the guidelines.
    • Take-home brochure and other materials to reinforce what they have learned.
    • Optional baseline survey of early detection behaviors to serve as a foundation for measuring impact.

  • The BeAware Foundation is committed to measuring and reporting on its ability to make and sustain meaningful changes in early detection behavior.
